About the Program

A new law was recently passed in California to change the age when children can begin Kindergarten. Under this new law, children must turn 5 years old on or before September 1st to enroll in Kindergarten. Previously, children could be enrolled in Kindergarten if they turned 5 years old by December 2nd.

This law also created Transitional Kindergarten (TK). This is the first year of a two-year Kindergarten program, which uses a modified Kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate.

According to the law, a child is eligible for TK if his or her 5th birthday is between September 2nd and December 2nd.

Curriculum

Transitional Kindergarten uses a unique, specialized curriculum that is based on the Kindergarten standards and is designed to support young 5 year olds. Classes are taught by credentialed teachers with extra training to teach young Kindergarten students.
